Wedding Music Mistakes Not to Make

First things first, we hope that you have decided to hire a professional to handle your wedding music. If you read our previous posts about hiring a DJ vs. band and a DJ vs. wedding ceremony musician, you’ll remember that the most important thing regarding music at your wedding is to make sure you hire an experienced professional. Aside from this, there are many other mishaps that can come into play regarding your wedding music. To make sure your wedding music is a positive memory from your wedding, be sure to avoid the common wedding music mistakes outlined below.

1. Only playing one type of music.
If you and your fiancé are really into a certain genre of music, make sure you request to have some of your favorite songs played at your wedding. However, listening to 4 hours of only country or indie music can drive your guests insane. In order to persuade your guests to stick around your reception, you’ll want to make sure you are playing music that they will enjoy and want to dance to.

2. Not having pre-ceremony music.
Many guests will arrive to a wedding ceremony 15-20 minutes early. Who wants to rush into a wedding just as the bridal party is walking down the aisle? Not us! Sitting in silence before the ceremony begins can seem like a really long time if you do not have your DJ play pre-ceremony music to lighten the mood.

3. Not having a Do & Do Not play list.
You don’t want to be disappointed in the music on your big day and your wedding DJ doesn’t want you to either. Sit down with your fiancé several weeks before your wedding to create a Do and Do Not play list. This will ensure that your DJ is aware of your music requests and will play, or not play, the appropriate music.

4. Not having a large enough dance floor.
This is an important one! Having an amazing wedding DJ, spectacular venue and great food and drinks does not guarantee a fun reception if your guests have nowhere to dance. A good way to estimate what size dance floor you need is to have 2-4 square feet of dance floor area per guest. So if you have 100 guests at your wedding, you will need a 10’x20’ to a 20’x20’ dance floor.

5. Not meeting with your DJ or Musicians before your wedding.
Your DJ wants to meet you in-person just as much as you want to meet your wedding vendors before your big day. Make it a priority to have a meeting before your wedding day. This will allow your DJ to map out a timeline for your wedding day, go over all of the details for your wedding and will enable you to get a feel for how your DJ will Emcee your reception.
