Going wedding dress shopping is something most women dream about from the time they get engaged. It’s a special occasion in itself, with many women bringing those nearest and dearest along for the big purchase. Read below for a few wedding dress purchase tips!

What type of dress fits the occasion?

As if finding the perfect wedding dress isn’t hard enough, you also need to find a dress that fits the season and type of wedding you’re having. If you’re getting married in the Summer outside, a dramatic gown with a train may keep you hot all night. Having a formal Winter wedding? Well then your dress should also be formal and warm.

When should you start wedding dress shopping?

We suggest looking for your dress at least 6-8 months prior to your wedding date. Many dresses are custom made, which means they’ll take several months to arrive. Then you’ll have to factor in time for several alterations fittings. The list goes on, which is why you don’t want to wait until the last minute to find that perfect dress. This also ensures you have plenty of time to search for the right dress for you, without feeling rushed.

Where should you buy your dress?

Before going into any stores to try on dresses, read online reviews. Purchasing a wedding dress is a big investment. You’ll want to make sure you are buying one from a reputable store that gives great customer service. You’ll also want to call in advance to schedule an appointment to come in. Most stores require an appointment to try on dresses as they’ll have a dress consultant on hand just for you.

How much should you spend on a wedding dress?

Your dress budget is completely up to you! Some brides spend a few hundred dollars on their gown, while others spend a few thousand. It’s best to have a budget in mind before starting your wedding dress search. Most bridal salons will ask for your dress budget when you arrive for your appointment. This allows them to offer you dresses within your budget, so you don’t fall in love with something outside of your budget. If you find a dress at the top of your budget, ask about special pricing. Many stores offer discounts, sales and trunk shows which can help save on cost.
