Let Your DJ Choose Your Wedding Dress!
I’ve DJ’d many weddings over the years but never had the pleasure of attending a dress fitting. With that being said, what is the difference between a Vera Wang and an Oscar de la Renta? I really can’t tell you. I actually had to Google dress designers just to know the names of them. What I do know is your wedding dress will be the most expensive and gorgeous dress you will ever purchase. So why am I even writing a blog post about wedding dresses to begin with?
I’ve seen my share of wedding gowns over the years having dj’d over 1,500 events, and have learned a thing or two about those oh so lovely wedding gowns. I’ve seen brides, mothers, and sometimes wedding coordinators fighting to bustle the dress, brides trying to hold themselves in the dress while dancing and, of course, the embarrassing moments where they are falling out of the dress. There were lots of uncomfortable moments and even times when the bride had to change out of her beautiful dress into something she could actually dance in. I wonder why on earth do these brides spend so much time and money picking out the most beautiful dress they can’t comfortably dance in on their wedding day. So how does it exactly affect me? It is my job to help create memories, to run the wedding as the MC, and most importantly to play great music so guests (especially the Bride) will dance until they fall over from exhaustion. There’s a whole lot of fussing over the dress and I don’t mean when shopping for it! So why do so many brides end up like this? Honestly I don’t know. If I did I’d probably be the go to dress shopping source for brides! Instead, the purpose of this post is to challenge you, the Bride, or the mother of the bride, or whoever you are, to put a lot of thought into the selection of the wedding dress…not just to look for a dress that looks amazing on you. Make sure you consider whether you can comfortably wear the dress for 8 to 10 hours, dance in it without body parts falling out of it, tripping over it or any circumstances that might prohibit you from comfortably enjoying the evening. Perhaps you should dance around the store, jump up and down, walk, run and shake your butt off in your gown before buying it! Do a whole lot more than twirling around before you say “Yes to the Dress” because truthfully you won’t be dancing like a ballerina at your wedding. You should make sure you have at least 2 people with you at your fitting who can learn and MASTER the technique to bustling your dress. I imagine many of the wedding dress disasters I’ve seen have happened due to improper bustling, so make that a huge priority when you shop. There is one other option of course and I’ve seen it work beautifully: Buy 2 dresses! Get yourself a “transformable” dress or a shorter cocktail dress that is classy and elegant and easy to dance in and change after you’ve cut your cake…then you can dance freely without any worry for the rest of the night. Before you buy your wedding gown, make sure you consider all of the scenarios. If you want to dance and party at your wedding, you most definitely want to be comfortable and you want to know without a doubt that your wedding dress will let you do that! With that being said may the best dress win, dance your butt OFF and, with any luck, try to keep your dress ON!
