You may have always dreamed of writing your own vows, but your partner may not have this same dream. Discuss together whether you are going to be writing your vows. If you’re both not on board with the idea, it might be a good decision to stick with traditional vows for your ceremony.

Decide if you’ll keep your vows secret.
Some couples write their wedding vows together or share them with each other before their wedding day. Other couples decide to surprise one another during their wedding ceremony with what they’ve written. Whatever you decide, discuss it in advance so neither one of you are disappointed.

Discuss the details of your vows in advance.
You probably don’t want one person reciting 500 word wedding vows, while the other person only has 200 words in their vows. Equally as upsetting would be for you to profess your undying love to your partner, while their vows consist of funny memories and inside jokes. To avoid any disappointments on your wedding day, even if you’re keeping your wedding vows a secret, you’ll want to discuss the details of your wedding vows in advance. An easy way to do this is to create a template for what to include and not include in your wedding vows. This can include length of vows and what’s included in the content.

Research the content of your vows.
Some of us are natural writers at heart and writing wedding vows comes easy to people like this. For the majority of us, writing your own vows may seem intimidating and you may not know where to begin. That’s why doing some research in advance will help you along your creative writing way. Read traditional vows for inspiration on what to include in your personal vows. Poems, song lyrics and movie quotes are also great ways to get some inspiration for writing your vows. However you decide to write them, just make sure to do it well in advance so you aren’t stressing to get them written at the last minute!
