How to Write a Wedding Toast
Public speaking is the most common phobia, wedding toasts included. Have you been asked to speak at an upcoming wedding and you’re in a panic to write a wedding toast? We’ve got you covered! Having provided DJ services at thousands of weddings, we have heard our fair share of the good, bad and ugly wedding toasts. Giving a wedding toast is a lot of pressure. You have to include the right amount of sentiment, throw in a funny line or two and keep guests engaged.

Prepare in advance.
Don’t procrastinate to write your speech, or even worse, improvise what to say during your toast. It is an honor to toast at a couples’ wedding and should be taken seriously. Give yourself a few weeks to prepare what to say, and read it to someone else in advance to help with editing.
Personalization.
It’s great to look for ideas for what to say or do during your toast online. However, make sure what you say is unique to your relationship with the couple. Having a meaningful toast is the best kind of toast you can have.
Four part toast.
A great way to write your speech is to break it up into four parts:
- Talk about your relationship with the couple and how you know them
- Tell a personal joke or memory you have with the couple or bride/groom individually
- Speak about how great they are as a couple, along with your wishes for their future marriage
- Toast your drink
Timing is everything.
Remember, it’s a toast not a speech! Speaking time can last anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes, but be sure not to speak for too long. Typically the hot meal is waiting to be served until after the speeches. You don’t want a hungry crowd waiting to eat cold food while you ramble on. Keep it short and sweet!
