Hiring a Wedding Vendor: 10 Questions to Ask First

Meeting with a wedding vendor can be intimidating. You may not know which questions to ask or what type of budget you should present to them when asked. With weddings being such a huge expense, as well as one of the most important days of your life, you’ll want to have a team of amazing vendors behind you. To make sure you have your “A” team, you’ll want to meet with all potential vendors before you hire them.

Something to note when meeting with a wedding vendor is to look for red flags. If a vendor bad mouths past couples, this is a red flag. No one likes every single person they work with, but a vendor should never bad mouth a past client in front of a potential or current client. If a prospective wedding vendor beats around your questions without giving straight answers, ask yourself why they won’t answer your questions. If someone doesn’t have a detailed contract listing when, where and everything they will be providing for your wedding, run the other way.

A great way to protect yourself from hiring the wrong vendor is to do your research. Look at online reviews to see what past couples have to say about their experiences working with a vendor. Ask friends or family members that have recently gotten married if they have vendors they’d recommend you use. Also, ask vendors you may have already hired who they recommend. The wedding industry is a small one, so vendors are great at being able to recommend the crème de la crème.

A few questions we think you should ask a wedding vendor you are considering hiring are:

  • What is your experience in the wedding industry?
  • Is this your full-time business?
  • Who will be my point of contact during my wedding planning process?
  • Who will be representing your business on my wedding day?
  • Have you ever worked at my wedding venue before?
  • How do you customize your services for each wedding?
  • What will be included with my wedding package?
  • What is your deposit and payment schedule?
  • Are you licensed and insured?
  • What makes you different from your competition?
