Engagement Party Planning

Traditionally the bride’s parents host the engagement party. However, these days it is perfectly acceptable for anyone to host the event, even including the bride and groom. Whoever hosts the party are also the ones that will send out invitations, and plan and pay for the party. The event can be held anywhere as soon as a few weeks after a couple get engaged, to as late as a few months prior to the wedding. Keep in mind that you will want to wait to send out engagement invitations until the bride and groom have compiled their wedding guest list. Anyone not invited to the wedding should also not be invited to the engagement party. The bachelor party in the other side, is for the groom or bride and their friends, they can invite anyone they want, doesn’t matter if they go to the wedding or not, since it is a night of celebration, with music, drinks and lots of fun!

Engagement parties can be thrown at any type of location ranging from a home, to a restaurant or country club. Just be sure that the engagement party doesn’t upstage the formalness of the actual wedding. There are no rules to how formal or informal an engagement party needs to be. Many couples love the casual feel of a backyard barbeque or seafood boil, while others are happy with a more formal sit down dinner at a restaurant. For the guest list, typically close family members, the bridal party and closest friends are always invited to the event. Depending on the party budget, the guest list can grow from anywhere between 50-100+ guests. When creating the invitations, be sure to omit where the happy couple are registered. It is bad etiquette to expect gifts at an engagement party. Gifts are only expected to be given at wedding showers and at the wedding.  Instead, we suggest that the bride and groom create their wedding website prior to their engagement party, and place links to their gift registries on there. That way, if a guest does want to give a gift, they know what and where to get it.
